Most famous: Chaweng Beach

Think of the seaside in Koh Samui and your mind almost certainly hops directly to Chaweng, the island’s main tourist beach. On the east coast, this six-kilometre stretch of soft white sand and clear blue water is known for its lively atmosphere and non-stop action. By day, it’s buzzing with watersports, including jet skiing and parasailing, and the beachfront restaurants are packed. Plus, there’s shopping at Central Mall just a few minutes’ walk from the sand. By night, the beach bars and clubs come alive with music, dancing and party vibes.

Family-friendly favourite: Lamai Beach:

Samui’s second most popular beach after Chaweng, Lamai is much more laid back. With soft white sands and gentle waters, this palm-lined four-kilometre stretch is popular with families looking to relax and take things at a slower pace. It’s also on the east coast, south of Chaweng, with a few bars and restaurants right on the beach and more behind, where the main road leads to Lamai Night Market. At the south end of the beach are Hin Ta Hin Yai – Samui’s famous, provocatively shaped “Grandfather and Grandmother” rocks.

Safe snorkelling: Crystal Beach

Just north of Lamai, this tiny bay curves around clear, calm waters, which are perfect for kiddos getting to grips with swimming and snorkellers looking to make some aquatic discoveries. Spend the day soaking up the sun on the pure white sand, wading into the warm waters and climbing on the unique, smooth rock slabs peaking above the waves.

Chillest vibes: Choeng Mon Beach

On the northeast coast, just 10 minutes from the action of Chaweng, Choeng Mon is quieter and more secluded – perfect for those looking for romance or a relaxed family retreat. Well sheltered by its curved bay and Fan Noi island on its tip, this beach has fine, powdery white sand and calm waters, great for swimming. There are a few laid-back beach bars and watersports rental spots, and you can get a massage right on the sand.

Comes alive at night: Bophut Beach

On the northern coast, this three-kilometre crescent of golden sand, with picturesquely tattered piers trailing into the sea, is an active fishing bay, so the water is not as clear as some other beaches in Samui. Its real draw is the vibrant Fisherman’s Village market, which comes to life every Friday night with souvenirs, street food and entertainment.

Most authentic: Maenam Beach

Seven kilometres of soft golden sand lapped by green-blue waters run along the island’s northern coast, to the west of Bophut. Palm-fringed and postcard-perfect, Maenam is a tranquil retreat that attracts those looking for best beaches in Koh Samui.
