Dino Dreams & Island Scenes: Explore Thailand’s Iconic Movie Locations from SAii Phi Phi

Welcome to Thailand: Hollywood’s Tropical Backlot

If you’ve ever found yourself mesmerised by a sweeping island shot or a wild jungle chase scene, chances are it was filmed in Thailand. With its otherworldly landscapes, turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs, the Kingdom has long been a go-to for filmmakers seeking a tropical setting with a touch of adventure. From Oscar-winning dramas to blockbuster thrillers, Thailand is a true movie-lover’s playground.

With Jurassic World: Rebirth set to ramage into cinemas this July, the spotlight is once again shining on the country’s most cinematic corners. Come with us as we explore Thailand’s on-screen credentials and offer a few top tips on how best to experience them for yourself.

Jurassic World: Rebirth – Filmed in Thailand’s Wildest Wonders

The seventh installment in the beloved franchise, Jurassic World: Rebirth, brings the dinosaurs back to their roots, with several key scenes filmed in Thailand’s lush national parks and pristine islands.

  • Ko Kradan, part of the Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang, offers crystalline beaches that make a picture-perfect backdrop for high-octane dino drama.

  • Ao Phang Nga National Park, with its towering limestone karsts and emerald-green waters, creates the kind of primeval setting that feels straight out of another era.

  • And for those craving jungle adventure, Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi delivers misty trails, waterfalls, and a rainforesty atmosphere that’s worthy of the Jurassic name.

These stunning landscapes are not just film sets, they’re real-life destinations you can explore during your stay at SAii Phi Phi Island Village, with bespoke excursions that bring you right into the heart of the action. But more on that later.

Maya Bay: The Legendary Setting of The Beach

Of course, no cinematic tour of Thailand is complete without a visit to Maya Bay, made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach (2000), directed by Danny Boyle. Located on Koh Phi Phi Leh, just a short boat ride from SAii, this world-renowned cove continues to captivate travellers with its impossibly white sand, vertical cliffs, and enduring pop-culture status. Whether you’re a film buff or beach lover, Maya Bay is unmissable.

The White Lotus: Thailand’s Latest TV Star

Following seasons set in Hawaii and Sicily, HBO’s The White Lotus recently turned its lens to Thailand’s luxury resorts and cultural beauty. The show’s use of Phuket and Koh Samui has seen fans of the series heading to southern Thailand and its tropical islands. For a taste of the culture and intrigue that the show captures so well, we recommend staying at SAii Koh Samui Villas or SAii Laguna Phuket.

SAii Koh Samui Villas

Whether you’re into kayaking through mystic mangroves, climbing limestone cliffs or hiking through Jurassic-like jungles, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right onto a movie set (without the danger of rogue raptors).

Book Your Jurassic Getaway

With the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth coming up, there’s no better time to follow in the footsteps of stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey. Whether you’re a fan of dino-sized action, cult-classic beaches, or prestige television, Thailand delivers it all—and SAii Phi Phi Island Village is your front-row seat.

Best Beaches in Koh Samui: Where to Swim, Sunbathe and Stay

Deficient in Vitamin Sea? Craving a beachy escape? Set in the glittering Gulf of Siam and outlined with soft sands, shaded by tropical palms, these beaches in Koh Samui are your go-to seaside destination in Thailand. You’ll find great food, friendly locals and plenty of activities for all ages. In fact, your only problem is going to be picking your favourite sandy spot to laze the days away.

That’s where we can help. This blog is our ultimate guide to Koh Samui’s best beaches for chilling, partying, lounging, swimming… or whatever you have in mind. Read on to find your perfect beachy match.

Most famous: Chaweng Beach

Think of the seaside in Koh Samui and your mind almost certainly hops directly to Chaweng, the island’s main tourist beach. On the east coast, this six-kilometre stretch of soft white sand and clear blue water is known for its lively atmosphere and non-stop action. By day, it’s buzzing with watersports, including jet skiing and parasailing, and the beachfront restaurants are packed. Plus, there’s shopping at Central Mall just a few minutes’ walk from the sand. By night, the beach bars and clubs come alive with music, dancing and party vibes.

Family-friendly favourite: Lamai Beach:

Samui’s second most popular beach after Chaweng, Lamai is much more laid back. With soft white sands and gentle waters, this palm-lined four-kilometre stretch is popular with families looking to relax and take things at a slower pace. It’s also on the east coast, south of Chaweng, with a few bars and restaurants right on the beach and more behind, where the main road leads to Lamai Night Market. At the south end of the beach are Hin Ta Hin Yai – Samui’s famous, provocatively shaped “Grandfather and Grandmother” rocks.

Safe snorkelling: Crystal Beach

Just north of Lamai, this tiny bay curves around clear, calm waters, which are perfect for kiddos getting to grips with swimming and snorkellers looking to make some aquatic discoveries. Spend the day soaking up the sun on the pure white sand, wading into the warm waters and climbing on the unique, smooth rock slabs peaking above the waves.

Chillest vibes: Choeng Mon Beach

On the northeast coast, just 10 minutes from the action of Chaweng, Choeng Mon is quieter and more secluded – perfect for those looking for romance or a relaxed family retreat. Well sheltered by its curved bay and Fan Noi island on its tip, this beach has fine, powdery white sand and calm waters, great for swimming. There are a few laid-back beach bars and watersports rental spots, and you can get a massage right on the sand.

Comes alive at night: Bophut Beach

On the northern coast, this three-kilometre crescent of golden sand, with picturesquely tattered piers trailing into the sea, is an active fishing bay, so the water is not as clear as some other beaches in Samui. Its real draw is the vibrant Fisherman’s Village market, which comes to life every Friday night with souvenirs, street food and entertainment.

Most authentic: Maenam Beach

Seven kilometres of soft golden sand lapped by green-blue waters run along the island’s northern coast, to the west of Bophut. Palm-fringed and postcard-perfect, Maenam is a tranquil retreat that attracts those looking for the quintessential Thai beach. Stroll, sunbathe or rest in the shade and gaze across the Gulf to Koh Phangan. Savour delicious Thai delicacies at beachside cafes or take advantage of the conditions for a spot of windsurfing. And for a fittingly peaceful stay, check out our sister resort, Santiburi Samui, set right on the sand.

Secluded secret, near the action: Hanuman Bay

For the best of both worlds, head north of Chaweng’s vibrant bustle to find a tiny curve of a bay, with powder-soft sand and peaceful blue waters. Within easy reach of the action, Hanuman Bay is a secluded retreat for lazy days of sun-soaking, kayaking and snorkelling or sipping drinks with friends at SAii Beach Club. Linger a bit longer with a stay at SAii Koh Samui Villa.

Why SAii Beach Club is the Island’s Coolest New Hotspot

There’s a new reason to love Samui, and it’s right on the sand. We’ve just opened SAii Beach Club at SAii Koh Samui Villas, and we’re pretty sure it’ll be your new favourite hangout. Read on to discover why.

Set on the serene north end of Chaweng Beach, this exciting beach club in Koh Samui is within easy reach of all the action while offering a blissful escape from the hustle and bustle, with front-row seats to the ocean and laid-back vibes that make the madness feel worlds away. Yep, SAii Beach Club is a sanctuary of serenity where resort guests and day visitors can come chill and unwind in style.

The vibe: lazy days, sunset sips

This isn’t your typical beach party scene; it’s cooler, calmer, and a little more refined. The SAii Beach Club vibe is laid-back and dreamy; think lounge beats drifting from the poolside DJ booth, sunset cocktails with your feet in the sand, and meals that turn into conversations that stretch on for hours.

Grab a bean bag by the shore, sip a perfectly chilled tropical cocktail, or gather your crew around a table on the pool deck for a lazy lunch or drawn-out dinner. In the evenings, the music picks up just enough to set the mood, but don’t expect a full-on rave. We’re keeping it loungey and laid-back.

Food & drinks: island flavours, global tastes

Our top tip? Come hungry! SAii Beach Club brings the best of SAii Koh Samui’s dining concepts direct to the sand so you can cure your cravings without moving a muscle.

  • Mornings start fresh with wholesome options from Terra & Mar.
  • From midday, dive into grilled seafood and Mediterranean fare at Miss Olive Oyl.
  • Craving something bold and local? Mr. Tomyam delivers classic street food favourites, including a must-try Thai-style pizza that’s made for sharing with friends.
  • For deeper, richer flavours, explore the rich Asian specialities from Jiao Wu.
  • Got a sweet tooth? bean/Co has you covered with pastries, coffee and tasty treats.

And when you’re ready to cool off, make your way to the swim-up Singha Splash Pool Bar, where expert bartenders serve tropical cocktails and fresh coconuts with a smile.

The best time to come to SAii Beach Club

Anytime is a good time to relax by the sea, but there are a couple of happenings you might want to know about. It’s Happy Hour every day from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, which means buy 1 get 1 free on the same cocktail and buy 2 get 1 free on the same beer.

A Thai island trip isn’t complete without a fire show, and SAii Beach Club’s is one of the best. Check out the dazzling after-dark pyrotechnics by the sea every Tuesday and Friday, 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

See you at SAii

Whether you’re chasing the perfect sunset, looking to share some good food with great friends, or just want to relax somewhere effortlessly cool, SAii Beach Club delivers the ultimate chill-out spot.

It’s open every day from 11:00 am – 10:00 pm and Day Passes are available; book yours now and join the cool kids.

Why and Where to Stay in Laguna, Phuket’s Hottest Destination

https://www.lagunaphuket.com/about/

Have you heard of “the Beverly Hills of Phuket?” A luxurious tropical enclave on the island’s east coast, the Laguna neighbourhood has been growing in popularity over the past couple of decades and these places to stay in Phuket are fast becoming the go-to destination for vacationers, second-home owners, families and remote workers. But what’s all the fuss about?

In this blog, we’re diving into Laguna, Phuket’s hottest destination, from its humble origins to everything happening right now, plus top tips on how best to enjoy it and where to stay in the heart of all the tropical action.

Laguna’s history: from tin mine to eco-luxury destination

In 1984, Bang Tao Bay was home to a long-abandoned tin mine, generally considered too polluted to build on. Future-thinking developers acquired the land and embarked on a 10-year clean-up project, planting more than 7,000 trees to transform the wasteland, purify the earth and start a new chapter of regeneration.

The Banyan Tree was the first hotel to open its doors in 1994, and since then, the area has gone from strength to strength. Now Thailand’s premier integrated destination, Laguna is a shining example of sustainable, eco-friendly luxury island living.

Set across 1,000 acres of lush, verdant land on a three-kilometre stretch of beautiful sand, it’s home to six world-class hotels, spas, dining, watersports (on the lagoon and the sea), an 18-hole golf course and much more.

What’s so special about Laguna Phuket?

With the sparkling waters of the Andaman on one side and beautiful, serene lagoons set amid forested parkland, Laguna welcomes residents and guests with a full slate of amenities inside a scenic paradise with shopping, spas, and entertainment all on the doorstep.

There are annual marathons and triathlons, an international kindergarten and a comprehensive wellness clinic, plus great infrastructure and endless dining destinations all just 25 minutes from Phuket Airport. It’s easy to see why it’s popular with holiday-makers, families and remote workers.

All six resorts within Laguna are integrated into the neighbourhood and, as a hotel guest, you can explore freely, enjoying all the facilities and restaurants at any of the properties via complimentary shuttle boats that get you where you’re going in style and safety.

Things to do in Laguna Phuket

When staying in Laguna, you get direct access to Bang Tao Bay, a now-pristine stretch of sand lapped by the Andaman. Out on the waves and on the lagoons inland, watersport options include kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing and more.

For a more sedate pace, the hotel spas offer blissful spa experiences, and Laguna’s BDMS Wellness Center integrates advanced science and technology into services and experiences, including IV therapy, anti-ageing treatments and holistic health screenings.

Laguna Golf Phuket helps players take their game to new levels with tuition from PGA pros and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It’s an 18-hole, par-71 course, where you can tee off with green mountains and the glittering ocean as a backdrop.

Where to stay in Laguna Phuket

Like we mentioned, there are six hotels integrated into the Laguna eco-system, and perhaps we’re biased, but we recommend SAii Laguna Phuket! Freshly renovated rooms, a brand new lobby and updated dining destinations including the beachside Terra & Mar mean a super comfy and luxurious stay. Plus, brand-new SAii Spa helps you unwind with irresistible treatments to boost your whole-life wellness.

We’re located right between the ocean and the lagoon, so it’s serene water wherever you look, and our team has the inside scoop on all the neighbourhood happenings.

The Laguna life awaits in Phuket’s answer to Beverly Hills. Start planning your SAii stay with our latest offers.

Can I be a Digital Nomad in Thailand?

Yes you can! From visas and healthcare to where to base yourself, here’s how to embark on your remote work journey as one of the digital nomads in Thailand

Beautiful beaches, glittering cities, fast WiFi and affordable cost of living… no wonder Thailand is consistently ranked among the world’s best destinations for digital nomads. It’s not just the comparatively cheap rent that draws remote workers here; it’s also the ease of settling into a work-life rhythm, whether you’re new to the nomad lifestyle or a seasoned pro.

So, is Thailand a safe, legal and practical place to set up your remote office? We’ve got everything you need to know, from visa options and cost of living to top locations for your home base by the beach.

What are the visa requirements for digital nomads in Thailand?

Several visa options make Thailand accessible for digital nomads looking to stay longer than a few weeks:

The Destination Thailand Visa

Tailored for digital nomads, this visa gets you in for 180 days at a time for five years. You’ll need financial proof of THB 500,000 (about USD 13,600) to show you can support yourself and a valid passport. Renewal options are available, so it’s ideal for extended stays.

SMART Visa

Offering a four-year stay, the SMART Visa caters to skilled professionals in specific industries, such as technology and wellness. To apply, you’ll need sponsorship from an eligible company in Thailand and a minimum income.

Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa

For those wanting to settle in Thailand, the LTR Visa offers a 10-year residency for retirees, professionals, and remote workers. You’ll need to prove you’ve earned USD 80,000 in the past two years, have at least USD 100,000 saved and show you’ve got health insurance with a minimum coverage of USD 50,000

Each of these options has different perks, so research thoroughly to choose the right fit for your work and lifestyle needs.

How’s the quality of life for digital nomads in Thailand?

Thailand’s cost of living is incredibly affordable. With rents as low as USD 300, you can live comfortably with good food, high-speed internet and a buzzing social life for USD 800 – 1,000. Here’s what you can expect:

Affordable rent and food

Whether you prefer street food or occasional fine dining, food costs are low, and you’ll find fresh, local options everywhere. Monthly rent varies but remains much cheaper than Western standards.

Expat-friendly vibes

Thailand has a welcoming community of locals and fellow expats, many of whom speak English, which makes navigating daily life easier.

OK, but is Thailand safe for foreigners?

The US Travel Advisory rates Thailand at a Level 1, which means simply “exercise normal caution. The country’s rep for safety makes it popular with remote workers and expats, especially women travelling solo.

What are the healthcare options for non-Thai citizens?

While public healthcare is available in Thailand, most expats and digital nomads rely on private health insurance for added peace of mind.

The private hospitals offer excellent care, and monthly health insurance premiums are typically affordable. It’s a good idea to explore plans designed for remote workers to ensure you’re covered wherever your work takes you.

Where’s the best place to work remotely in Thailand?

For digital nomads preferring urban vibes, Thailand’s cities offer modern amenities, expat-friendly communities and reliable internet.

Bangkok

The bustling capital provides a vibrant cosmopolitan lifestyle with co-working spaces, amazing shopping, endless dining options spanning the spectrum from street food to high-end, and efficient transport.

Chiang Mai

Fun in the Sun: Build Your Tropical Family Vacation

Ready for a fun-filled, action-packed adventure with the ones you love most? Looking forward to kicking back and enjoying some quality time in paradise? The pristine islands of Thailand and The Maldives offer families a tropical blend of blissful relaxation and exciting activities, and in this guide, we’re unlocking the secrets to a dream family getaway at the best family hotels in Thailand and Maldives.

Packing for Paradise: Tips for Family Travel

Preparing for a family escapade to a tropical island calls for savvy packing. Here’s what to include in your luggage:

  • Light Clothing: The key to staying comfortable in the tropical climate is lightweight, breathable clothing. Pack loose-fitting clothes in light fabrics to beat the heat.
  • Swimwear Essentials: Don’t forget swimsuits for the whole family! Whether it’s splashing in the resort pool or exploring the pristine beaches, swimwear is a must-have.
  • Sun Protection: Shield your family from the tropical sun. Bring along wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen to keep everyone protected during outdoor adventures.
  • Insect Repellent: While tropical paradises offer serene moments, they may also host pesky insects. Pack insect repellent to keep unwanted guests at bay during your explorations.

When it comes to the kiddos specifically, don’t forget to bring:

  • Toys and Gadgets: While they’ll be occupied and engaged by all the island adventures when they arrive, little ones may need some entertainment for long flights. Pack their favourite toys, books or gadgets to keep them occupied during travel and downtime.
  • Snack Stash: Thailand has amazing food, but sometimes, familiar snacks can be a lifesaver, especially during long journeys or when exploring remote areas.

When To Go: The Best Seasons For Family Travel In The Tropics

Thailand and the Maldives mostly share a common climate, loosely divided into three seasons:

  • Dry Season (November to February): Expect pleasant temperatures and clear skies. With lower humidity and comfortable weather, this time of year is ideal for families looking for outdoor adventures.
  • Hot Season (March to May): Temperatures and humidity levels soar, making outdoor activities a little more challenging. But beachside retreats are still a great option with refreshing dips in the ocean.
  • Monsoon Season (June to October): Sweeping monsoon rains might deter some travellers, but the rainfall often occurs in short bursts, leaving pockets of time for exploration between showers.

Family-Friendly Island Destinations: What to Consider

Tropical islands each offer their own unique allure for families seeking an escape:

  • Phuket: Known for its stunning beaches and diverse attractions, Phuket is a family favourite in Thailand’s Andaman Ocean. From the lively Patong Beach to the quieter Mai Khao Beach, this island offers a spectrum of experiences.
  • Koh Phi Phi: Also in the Andaman, Koh Phi Phi, with its emerald waters and dramatic cliffs, captivates visitors of all ages. Explore the stunning beaches, go snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, or hike through lush trails.
  • The South Male Atoll in Maldives is just 15 minutes from Malé International Airport by boat and home to CROSSROADS, the country’s largest multi-island hub. Crystal waters and powder-soft sands meet food, drink, shopping and more.
