Loy Krathong: Thailand’s Festival of Light and Togetherness
Published on: Oct 21, 2025

Each year, on the night of the full moon of the 12th lunar month—usually in November—Thailand comes alive with shimmering lights, music, and heartfelt celebrations during Loy Krathong, the country’s most enchanting festival.
When and Where It Happens

Loy Krathong is celebrated nationwide, from bustling Bangkok to tranquil coastal towns and island resorts. No matter where you are in Thailand, you’ll find rivers, lakes, and beaches glowing with floating krathongs—beautifully decorated banana-leaf baskets carrying candles, incense, and flowers.
The Meaning Behind the Lights

Traditionally, Thais float their krathongs to honor the Goddess of Water and wash away negativity, symbolizing a fresh start. As the candle drifts across the water, it carries with it one’s worries and wishes for the year ahead. It’s a moment of reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal that beautifully captures Thailand’s deep connection with nature.
A Family Affair
At our SAii Hotels & Resorts, guests often come together to craft their own krathongs from sustainable materials like banana leaves and flowers—an activity that’s as meaningful as it is fun. It’s a wonderful way for families to bond, learn about Thai culture, and share in the joy of creation. As evening falls, the floating ceremony transforms into a truly magical sight, with flickering lights mirrored in the water and smiles all around.
Festivities and Feasts
Beyond the spiritual element, Loy Krathong is also a time for celebration and community. Expect vibrant Thai dance performances, live music, and lavish Thai buffets filled with local favorites and festive treats. From fragrant curries to grilled seafood and sweet desserts, the evening becomes a feast for all senses.
The Sky Lanterns
In some parts of Thailand, people release lanterns into the sky, a symbol of letting go of misfortune. While this tradition creates stunning imagery, we kindly discourage lantern releases at our resorts to protect the environment and prevent fires. Instead, we focus on sustainable celebrations that honor Thai tradition while preserving the natural beauty around us.
